Evolution on the books

A federal judge ruled this week that schools in Cobb County, Ga., must remove stickers reading “Evolution is a theory, not a fact” from science textbooks. Judge Clarence Cooper said the disclaimer was an endorsement of “the well-known, prevailing alternative theory creationism,” constituting a violation of the constitutional separation of church and state. School officials approved the stickers two years ago, after 2,000 parents complained that science texts ignored the possibility that the universe was designed by an intelligent, higher power. Sadie Fields of the Christian Coalition said the ruling was “another example” of activist judges telling Americans how to live their lives.
