Elections postponed

The week's news at a glance.

Kabul

Afghanistan is not stable enough to hold parliamentary elections in September, President Hamid Karzai said this week. Karzai said elections would be delayed until next April to give the government time to disarm the militias that still dominate the country outside the capital. The government fears that the warlords who command private militias will hijack the election process, either by preventing people from voting or by intimidating them into voting for local warlords. Of some 60,000 militants, only about 10,000 have been disarmed and demobilized.
