Thwarting terrorists
The week's news at a glance.
Boston
Police in Boston and New York, alarmed by the March train bombings in Madrid, are taking unprecedented steps to prevent terrorists from using similar attacks to disrupt this summer’s political conventions. Both parties are meeting in convention halls abutting busy rail stations. In New York, thousands of extra officers will patrol Penn Station while GOP delegates meet upstairs in Madison Square Garden. In Boston, authorities will simply close North Station when Democrats gather later this month in the adjoining FleetCenter. “The mayor’s no longer talking about economic benefits to the city,” said David Tuerck of the Beacon Hill Institute, a Boston think tank. “He’s talking about, Let’s get past it.”
