U.S. terror expert expelled
The week's news at a glance.
Jakarta
Indonesia refused to renew a visa for a top American terror expert this week, apparently because her reports on Indonesian terrorism were too negative. Sidney Jones, head of the Jakarta office of the International Crisis Group, is a leading authority on Jemaah Islamiyah, a militant Islamic group with links to al Qaida. Her writings, which included criticism of the Indonesian military’s failure to rein in Jemaah Islamiyah, drew the ire of Gen. Ahmad Hendropriyono, director of the National Intelligence Agency. “She writes reports and sends them abroad, even though they are not all true,” Hendropriyono told the Jakarta magazine Tempo. “There must be steps taken against people who are not liked by the people of Indonesia.”
