UFOs or just weather?
The week's news at a glance.
Mexico City
The Mexican air force ignited a UFO scare last week when it released pictures of a cluster of glowing objects that seemed to hover around a drug-surveillance plane. Nervous pilots on a routine mission in March spotted the objects on their radar, and videotaped 11 blobs of light using an infrared camera. UFO chaser Jaime Maussan said the orbs appeared “intelligent” as they darted around and chased the aircraft. But Julio Herrera, a nuclear science researcher, said the mystery was probably nothing more than ball lightning, natural electrical discharges sometimes spotted near the ground during thunderstorms. These discharges, Herrera said, could have been drawn to the plane as a conductor.
