A tragic find

The week's news at a glance.

Toronto

A hiker last week stumbled across the skeletal remains of a Toronto girl who disappeared from her bedroom five months ago. The kidnapping of Cecilia Zhang, 9, horrified the city, and the frantic search gripped Canada for weeks. Cecilia’s parents made several appeals for her return, and offered to mortgage their house to pay a reward. The last time they saw their daughter was Oct. 20, at bedtime. The next morning she was gone; her window screen had been broken. Detectives had said they thought Cecilia might have been kidnapped for ransom and kept alive. But forensic tests determined that she was probably killed almost immediately. “We hope she did not suffer,” her parents said in a statement, “and hope she knows what a treasure she was to us.”
