Off with the veil

The week's news at a glance.

Orlando

A Florida judge has ruled that a Muslim woman cannot wear a veil in her driver’s license photo. The woman, Sultaana Freeman, obtained a license in 2001 that showed only her eyes. Shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the state told Freeman to get a new picture, without the veil. She refused, saying that uncovering her face in public would violate her Islamic beliefs, so the state revoked her license. The judge ruled that no one had the right to cover up on an official ID card. A local Muslim activist said that made perfect sense. “How else can you identify someone?” Freeman had no comment, but her husband, Abdul-Maalik Freeman, promised an appeal. “She’s not lifting the veil.”
