Army leader quits

Army Secretary Thomas White abruptly resigned last week after facing months of criticism over his ties to the scandal-plagued Enron Corp. White had also battled publicly with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld over an expensive and advanced artillery system that Rumsfeld canceled. Rumsfeld thanked White for his two years of service in the post, but said little else about his departure. Speculation that White would step down had circulated for months, but his announcement caught his staff and even Army press officers by surprise. “We’re a little shocked at the moment,” an Army spokesman said.
