New York
New York, Washington, and other major cities began putting on “a show of force” this week that will last for the duration of the war with Iraq. In New York, armed guards were deployed around bridges and landmarks, and fighter jets patrolled the skies. In Miami and Los Angeles, the Coast Guard guarded harbors and watched over cargo ships. In Washington, masked “ninja guards” took up positions around the White House, the Capitol, and the monuments. The nation went back on orange alert, amid warnings that there was a “high” risk of a terrorist attack by Iraqi or al Qaida agents. Police officials said they were taking the warning very seriously. “It’s almost like ‘orange plus,’” said Miami police Chief John Timoney. “This is the real thing now.”
