NATO gets bigger
The week's news at a glance.
Prague
The West’s main military alliance grew from 19 to 26 members this week at its summit meeting in Prague. Former Soviet states Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia; former Warsaw Pact members Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Romania; and former Yugoslav republic Slovenia were all welcomed as full NATO members. The member states planned to discuss ways to combat international terror—even as a general, Europewide terror threat hung over Prague. Czech police were fully mobilized to deal with an expected crowd of thousands of anti-globalization protesters; for the terror threat, the government deployed 6,000 Czech soldiers. U.S. fighter jets flew patrols over the city.
