New Delhi
The parliament of mostly Hindu India has elected a popular Muslim scientist as president. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, 70, is widely revered in India for his work overseeing the country’s nuclear missile program. The energetic, charismatic nationalist is also known for writing best-sellers that exhort Indians to harness science and technology for the good of the country. A bachelor who likes to read poetry and play music, Kalam is no politician, but then the Indian presidency is mostly a ceremonial post. His election marks the third time a Muslim has held the position.
