Dozens of wildfires in northern Quebec sent smoke billowing for hundreds of miles this week, covering cities as far away as Washington, D.C., with a thick haze. Health officials in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, as well as in New York and Pennsylvania, warned people with heart and breathing problems to stay inside. Fires burned so hot in some dense forests that firefighters could not get near the flames, and even “water bomber” aircraft were rendered powerless, said Chantal Drapeau, a Quebec fire spokeswoman. “The water evaporates in the air before it even hits the ground,” she said.
