Innovation of the Week: A see-through semitruck
Samsung hopes to make getting stuck behind a semitruck a lot less annoying — and safer, said Jacob Brogan at Slate. The electronics giant has engineered a system that lets drivers see through the truck in front of them, so they can better decide whether it's safe to pass.
A wireless camera at the front of the semi sends video of the road ahead to four large screens on the rear of the trailer, making the truck a "resource for other drivers rather than a liability." Samsung recently concluded testing a prototype of what it calls the Safety Truck in Argentina, where traffic fatalities are among the highest in the world, and plans additional tests soon. With tens of thousands of truck-related crashes recorded every year in the U.S., Samsung's Safety Trucks might be a welcome sight here.
