Innovation of the week: Convert your clunker into a smart car with Hum
It costs $15 per month, hardware included

Most modern cars come equipped with a full suite of digital tools, but some 150 million vehicles on the road aren't connected at all. The good news: It doesn't take much to convert that clunker you're driving into a smart car, said Jordan Golson at Wired. Verizon's newly launched Hum is a small device that plugs into a vehicle's onboard diagnostic port. It collects and analyzes data on fuel economy, battery charge level, engine error codes, and more.
If something seems off, Hum will alert you via smartphone app and a speaker clipped to your visor, recommending repairs and even estimating costs. "Should something go kablooey," Hum offers OnStar-like roadside assistance and will call you after an accident to make sure you're OK. The service costs $15 a month, hardware included.
