Sky Sports described the rematch as a “brutal showdown” while the BBC called it a “gripping” title fight between the two middleweight talents.
After the fight Canelo hinted there could a possibility of a third duel. The Mexican, whose only previous career defeat came against Floyd Mayweather, said: “My corner told me that I needed to win the final round and that what’s I did. I’m very emotional.
“If the people want another fight then we’ll do it again. We’ll do it, no doubt.”
Kazakhstani Golovkin said: “I’m not going to say who won, because the victory belongs to Canelo according to the judges. I thought I fought better than he did. We would like to have a third fight, we will negotiate that, that’s what we want.”
