TWO MINUTES' SILENCE TO MARK ARMISTICE DAY Millions observed a two-minute silence at 11.0 am today to mark Armistice Day. Prime Minister David Cameron, who is in South Korea for the G20 summit, has laid a wreath at the site of the Battle of the Imjin River in 1951, when 59 men of the Gloucestershire Regiment died and 526 were captured by Chinese forces during the Korean War. It was the British Army's bloodiest battle since WWII. 'EMBARRASSED' POLICE LAUNCH DEMO INQUIRY The Metropolitan Police are launching an inquiry into why they were ill-prepared by for yesterday's student demo in London. An initially peaceful march turned violent, with protesters storming the Tory party HQ and launching missiles at police. Thirty-five arrests were made and 14 injuries reported. Police chief Sir Paul Stephenson admits his force was "embarrassed". In pictures: students on the march WORK-SHY WILL LOSE BENEFITS FOR THREE YEARS Unemployed people who refuse available jobs will be barred from claiming state benefits under proposals to be launched today in a White Paper by Iain Duncan Smith, the Work and Pensions Secretary. The first refusal will mean no Jobseeker's Allowance for three months. A second refusal will mean a six-month ban. A third refusal will bring an unprecedented three-year ban. The government hopes to reduce the number of workless households by 300,000. IDS: the new Chingford Polecat AMAZON ROW OVER PAEDOPHILE ADVICE GUIDE Amazon.com has caved into pressure to remove from its listings a self-published guide offering advice to paedophiles. The website had earlier refused to bow to the demands, saying it does not approve of censorship. Some users had threatened to boycott the site as a result. The author of the book, The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover's Code of Conduct, says paedophiles are misunderstood and his advice is intended to help them abide by the law. Deadlock between City and United PARCEL BOMB 'COULD HAVE EXPLODED OVER CANADA/US'The disguised bomb found on a UPS cargo plane at the East Midlands Airport had been set to go off at 10.30 UK time (5.30 am EDT) on Friday October 29, according to police. This suggests it was intended to cause a mid-air explosion. Depending on the final flight plan, it could have happened over a largely unpopulated area of eastern Canada - or the more densely populated US Eastern Seaboard. NEW BBC PENSION TALKS OFFEREDBBC director-general Mark Thompson has offered union leaders fresh talks in an attempt to avert a second 48-hour strike by journalists protesting at pension reform, planned for next Monday and Tuesday. The evacuees have been housed in football stadiums and various halls. Newly-wed Ari Margareta, 18, is quoted as complaining that "her biological needs were not being fulfilled". IT WAS A PLANE NOT A MISSILE, SAYS PENTAGON After deliberating for two days, the Pentagon has finally concluded that the mystery vapour trail filmed over Los Angeles came from an airplane not a missile. "There is no evidence to suggest it was anything other than an aircraft," said Colonel David Lapan.
