1. STURGEON SOUNDS CAMERON WARNING
Nicola Sturgeon has warned David Cameron that it cannot be "business as usual" in Scotland after her party's historic election success. The SNP leader told the BBC she had told the prime minister that Scotland had "voted for change" and her party's 56 MPs would ensure its voice was heard. Yesterday, Cameron reiterated his pledge to devolve further powers to Scotland.
2. IS DAVID MILIBAND ON THE WAY BACK?
Is David Miliband planning a bid to become Labour leader? The former leadership contender is being tipped for a return to British politics after his brother's overwhelming defeat on Thursday. David has always left open the possibility of returning to UK politics. In the aftermath of this week’s polling, he tweeted that Labour requires a period of “deep and honest thinking”.
3. DAVID CAMERON FINALISES HIS CABINET
David Cameron is putting the finishing touches to his first all-Tory cabinet. The prime minister has reappointed chancellor George Osborne, who has also been made first secretary of state. Staying in their posts are home secretary Theresa May, foreign secretary Philip Hammond, and Michael Fallon, the defence secretary.

4. MAN CONFESSES TO MURDER ON FACEBOOK
A man has confessed on Facebook to killing his wife, daughter and sister. Canadian police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide after a man posted on the social network that he had killed his daughter, wife and sister, before burning himself to death. “Now my family is pain-free and in heaven,” wrote Randy Janzen, after revealing the details of the spree.
5. NORTH KOREA TESTS ‘WORLD-LEVEL’ BOMB
North Korea claims it has test-fired a submarine-based ballistic missile. Kim Jong-Un, who oversaw the test, claims the weapon was developed on his “personal initiative". He hailed the missile as a "world-level strategic weapon capable of striking and wiping out in any waters the hostile forces infringing upon (North Korea's) sovereignty and dignity".
6. ELECTORAL BOUNCE AS FTSE RISES BY £50BN
The value of British companies rose by £50bn in response to the election result. Investors responded to the unexpectedly emphatic Tory victory by pouring money into the stock market. The benchmark FTSE 100 index of leading shares leapt 159.87 points to 7,046.82, while the FTSE 250 climbed 487.97, or 2.8%, to an all-time high of 17,935.93 - its best day for three and a half years.
7. AUSTRALIAN TERROR PLOT FOILED
A plot to detonate three bombs in Melbourne has been foiled, say police. A 17-year-old was arrested at his home, where police say they found the explosive devices, which were then made safe by the bomb squad. Prime minister Tony Abbott described the threat as "very serious". He added: “There is evidence of a bomb plot that was in a reasonably advanced state of preparation."
8. BRAND: I THOUGHT I COULD INFLUENCE POLL
Russell Brand has retracted his support for Ed Miliband and Labour, claiming he was “caught up in some mad The Thick of It” moment. The comedian-activist said he is going to “take a step away” from endorsing politicians. He admits he thought he could “influence the outcome on an election” but now realises he could not.
9. ARREST FOLLOWS PARACHUTE DISASTER
A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman suffered horrific injuries when her parachute failed to open during a skydive. The woman plunged 4,000ft over the Salisbury plains. She escaped death only because her reserve parachute, which also failed, opened just enough to slow her descent, and due to her experience as a jumper.
10. MOURINHO: GERRARD MADE ME BETTER
Jose Mourinho says Steven Gerrard made him a "better manager", ahead of the clash between Liverpool and Chelsea this weekend. Manchester United are at Crystal Palace for the tea-time kick off today. United can guarantee themselves Champions League football – at the expense of their bitter rivals Liverpool – with a win at Selhurst Park.
