1. Migrant ‘almost reached England on foot’
A spokesperson for Eurotunnel says a migrant stopped inside the Channel Tunnel had “almost succeeded” in reaching England. The Sudanese national, aged 40, was arrested a mile or two from the Dover end of the 31-mile tunnel on Tuesday. He is due to appear at Medway Magistrate’s Court, charged with causing an obstruction.
2. Trump dominates TV candidates’ debate
Property billionaire Donald Trump was the dominant figure in the first TV debate of wannabe Republican presidential candidates. The unusually wide field - 10 men and no women - were chosen by Fox TV on the basis of early polling. Trump refused to retract offensive remarks about women and refused to rule out a third-party run.

3. MH370: French planes to search for jet parts
France has deployed planes, boats and helicopters to its Indian Ocean territory Reunion to try to find more wreckage from the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 after a ‘flaperon’ which washed up there was confirmed as part of the plane. Malaysia has appealed to Mauritius and Madagascar to help widen the search.
4. Burglars ‘used gas’ to steal from Jenson Button
A spokesman for British F1 driver Jenson Button says he and his wife Jessica may have been “anaesthetised” by gas pumped into their air conditioning before they were burgled. Jewellery including Jessica’s engagement ring was taken from a rented villa in Saint-Tropez by two men on Monday. The Sun says the haul was worth £300,000.
5. Cameron defends £3m grant to Kids Company
David Cameron has insisted he was right to give Kids Company "one last chance" by approving a government grant of £3m despite warnings from civil servants. The charity closed on Wednesday amid claims of financial mismanagement, denied by founder Camila Batmanghelidjh. Former staff have also claimed the charity turned a blind eye to allegations including sexual assault.

6. Andy Murray to become a father
Tennis star Andy Murray and his wife Kim are expecting their first child, his agent has confirmed. The baby is believed to be due in February. The couple were married in April in Murray's home town of Dunblane. The former Wimbledon champion, 28, enjoyed a strong season following his marriage and made the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon.

Jon Stewart, whose Daily Show has become essential viewing for younger people turned off by the US news media, hosted his final episode after 16 years last night. He received tributes from “frenemies” including Hilary Clinton, who thanked him for leaving “just when I’m running for president” adding: “What a bummer”.

8. Russia bulldozes cheese and steamrollers fruit
The Russian authorities have displayed their determination to impose a ban on food imports from the EU by publicly bulldozing a ‘cheese mountain’, steamrollering fruit and burning a pile of bacon. Russia banned the imports in retaliation after the EU imposed sanctions because of its annexation of Crimea and actions in Ukraine.
9. Lord Janner must face abuse charges in court
Lord Janner, the 87-year-old peer who faces allegations of child sex abuse, must appear in court in person Westminster Magistrates' Court has ruled. The peer, who is suffering from dementia, denies allegations of abuse in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. If a crown court judge decides the former Labour MP for Leicester is fit to plead, he may face trial.

Andy Burnham yesterday launched a manifesto setting out his plans for the Labour leadership, as he fights back following the recent surge for radical rival Jeremy Corbyn in recent weeks.The manifesto sets out the shadow health secretary's vision for the economy and details a number of key policies he would adopt for the party to take into the next election. By his own admission the key issue for Labour is to present a compelling case on the economy.
