1. Golden Globes nominate 3 female directors in 1 year for the 1st time
The Golden Globes generated outrage last year after again shutting out female directors. Voters didn't repeat history this time around. The 2021 Golden Globe nominations were announced on Wednesday, and the show made history by for the first time ever nominating three women for Best Director in the same year. Nomadland's Chloé Zhao, Promising Young Woman's Emerald Fennell, and One Night in Miami's Regina King were all nominated in the category, alongside Mank's David Fincher and The Trial of the Chicago 7's Aaron Sorkin. Zhao also became the first Asian woman to ever nab a nomination in this category, Variety reports. Pitifully, before this year, only five women had ever been nominated for Best Director in Golden Globes history, according to the Los Angeles Times.
2. Hamilton snags 2 Golden Globe nominations — but it's not eligible at the Oscars
Golden Globes voters didn't throw away their shot to recognize Hamilton, but don't expect the Oscars to follow suit. On Wednesday, Disney's filmed performance of the wildly-popular musical was nominated for two Golden Globes. Ever since Hamilton debuted on Disney+ last year, pundits have wondered whether awards shows like the Globes and the Oscars would nominate it. The Academy's Awards Rules Committee, in fact, held a meeting to discuss the musical, and decided to disqualify it, even though "there is no rule on the Academy's books that would technically preclude" it from competing, The Hollywood Reporter writes. Now that it's been welcomed into the Golden Globes, some experts think Hamilton could go all the way to the top with a Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy win.

3. Questlove won a major award at Sundance, despite not knowing it was a contest
Nothing today will make you happier than Questlove's absolutely joyous reaction to learning his directorial debut won the Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the U.S. Documentary Competition. The musician and Roots frontman, whose Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) told the story of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, was openly shocked when he received the news from the passenger seat of a car. "Wait a minute, this is too soon," Questlove said. "I didn't even know this was a contest, yo." Questlove later reacted on social media, tweeting "OOOOMMMGGGGHGGG WE DID IT" and "wowowoeowowoeororocokmjust n mxkekwkjwbrmtglglxkwnwnwwnnnnnzhzkqlqoqoqoqqo." He added on Instagram, "Jesus H Christ!!!! We Won FRIGGIN SUNDANCE TWICE … I feel like breakdancin!!!"

4. Lil Uzi Vert implanted a $24 million pink diamond on his forehead
In 2017, Lil Uzi Vert laid his eyes on a natural pink diamond for the first time, and knew he had to have it … implanted on his face where he can't actually see it. The rapper showed off his new forehead bling in a video on Instagram with the caption "beauty is pain." He says he's been paying for the nearly 11-carat diamond, reportedly worth $24 million, since 2017. He apparently fixed the diamond between his eyes with a piercing, and plans to finalize the placement when swelling goes down. Twitter users pointed out the rapper better stay on guard, as Thanos may mistake his diamond for the final Infinity Stone.

5. The Weeknd is preparing for this weekend
The Weeknd is relaxing in luxury ahead of the biggest performance of his career. The singer reportedly spent $100,000 to stay in a 6-bedroom, $9.1 million home near Tampa this week, ahead of his halftime show performance at Super Bowl LV on Sunday. In addition to splashing out on a place to crash, The Weeknd spent $7 million of his own money on the 13-minute performance (roughly $538,000 per minute), on top of the show's allotted budget, all for the sake of art. But halftime hasn't been his only focus this week — today he announced his rescheduled 2022 world tour, and that his greatest hits album, The Highlights, is now available for preorder. So yeah, safe to say you might be hearing a lot about him in the days to come.
