Donald Trump publicly called for Irish reunification during a two-day trip to Ireland at the weekend. The US president told reporters that he would “love” to see Northern Ireland and Ireland unified and that “it’s going to happen eventually” so it “may as well happen now”. Nationalists welcomed his remarks, while the UK government and unionist parties in Northern Ireland rebutted them.
