Transfer news and rumours: Jamie Vardy, Alexis Sanchez, Riyad Mahrez
The latest deals tipped to take place during the January transfer window
Jamie Vardy: Leicester City to Manchester United
Manchester United have made “preliminary inquiries” for a number of strikers, including Leicester City and England star Jamie Vardy, according to The Daily Telegraph. The 31-year-old signed a new contract in 2016 and would cost United around £35m, but he would be available to play in the Champions League should he make the move to Old Trafford.

Another Leicester City star who could be on the move is winger Riyad Mahrez. The Algerian is in talks with Liverpool, but the Daily Express says that he would prefer a move to Arsenal. Liverpool want to bring Mahrez to Anfield as a replacement for Philippe Coutinho, who signed for Barcelona in a £142m deal.
Alexis Sanchez: Arsenal to Manchester United
Various media report this morning that Manchester United have made a move to hijack Alexis Sanchez’s likely transfer to Manchester City. According to The Guardian, United have bid £25m for the Chilean, who is out of contract at the end of the season, and have also included Henrikh Mkhitaryan in part exchange. Sanchez’s wages seem to be the biggest stumbling block for Jose Mourinho’s side. Liverpool are also reported to have made a move to sign Sanchez.
Naby Keita: RB Leipzig to Liverpool
RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita has already signed a £57m deal to join Liverpool in the summer, but the Reds are in negotiations with the Bundesliga club to try and bring him to Anfield this month. The Daily Telegraph says that “Liverpool are now prepared to pay more to get the player early”.
Arthur Melo: Gremio to Manchester United/Chelsea
Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea are set to “battle it out” for the signature of Brazilian star Arthur Melo, the Daily Star reports. The 21-year-old Gremio midfielder is expected to make the Brazil World Cup squad and reportedly has a £45m buyout clause. Gremio may be willing to listen to bids of between £30m and £35m, says the newspaper.
Daniel Sturridge: Liverpool to Southampton/West Ham
England striker Daniel Sturridge will be allowed to leave Liverpool, but the Anfield club want £30m for the 28-year-old. The Liverpool Echo says that both Southampton and West Ham are interested in signing Sturridge, who is keen to get more first-team action in order to force his way into the England squad for the World Cup finals in Russia this summer.
Fred: Shakhtar Donetsk to Manchester United
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is looking for a long-term replacement for midfielder Michael Carrick, and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred could fit the bill. The 24-year-old Brazil international has been at Shakhtar for five seasons and has plenty of Champions League experience. According to the Daily Record, Fred is one of a number of midfielders “under consideration” by Mourinho.
