An image of Mercedes-AMG’s new GT four-door sports car has been leaked just days before the car is due to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

The slightly blurry picture, originally posted on motoring news site Carscoops, shows that the sports car features the two-door version’s large “Panamericana grille” at the front, and a sloping roofline that tails off to a small boot spoiler.

The “muscular lines” of the AMG GT four-door are also similar to those of its two-door sibling, the website says, although the new car has a slightly shorter bonnet and a taller roofline.

The car in the leaked image could be “the most potent version”, says Autocar, as official preview images from Mercedes show the vehicle without a rear wing and different wheel rims.

Meanwhile, Mercedes is tipped to launch the base model with a 4.0-litre 604bhp twin-turbocharged V8 engine paired with a nine-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive system, the magazine reports.

According to Auto Express, the sports car will be the first vehicle in the Mercedes range to carry the EQ Power+ branding - which indicates that it will also feature some form of performance hybrid system.

Not only would such a system boost performance, but it could also allow the sports car to drive on electric power alone “depending on battery capacity”, adds Evo.

Price and release date details are expected to be announced when the car is official revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, running from 8 to 18 March.
