Relations between the UK and EU took another downwards turn this week amid further threats of a ban on vaccine exports from the bloc.
European leaders held virtual talks on Thursday to discuss how to boost Covid vaccine supplies across the EU, while Boris Johnson warned that pharmaceutical giants could move their business to Britain if Brussels were to block supply chains.
The prime minister was also busy scrambling to repair relations with Tory backbenchers, after suggesting that UK pubs might require customers to show a vaccine certificate before pulling them a pint after reopening.

After a year of disruption caused by Covid restrictions across the globe, world trade has taken another hit after a 400-metre-long freight vessel became wedged across the Suez Canal. A team of Dutch salvage experts were called in to work alongside Egyptian authorities to unjam the vital trade route, as queues of container ships formed at the passageway’s two entries.
In the US, a surge in migrants trying to cross the Mexico border has triggered Joe Biden’s first major test since taking up residence in the White House.
Meanwhile, the retirement of a former world leader, David Cameron, took an unexpected turn. A watchdog set up by his government has announced an investigation into allegations that the ex-prime minister “has engaged in unregistered consultant lobbying” on behalf of Greensill Capital, a finance group that went into liquidation earlier this month.
