A look back at the Queen’s jubilees
This year marks the fourth major anniversary during the Queen’s 70-year reign
Brits are raising a toast to the news that pubs will be allowed to stay open into the early hours during the upcoming Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Licensing hours for pubs, bars and clubs will be extended from 11pm to 1am during the June Bank Holiday to mark the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the throne.
The government is following tradition in easing opening hours for the three nights from Thursday 2 June. Venues have previously been allowed to serve alcohol later than usual as the public joined the Royal Family in celebrating landmarks including the Queen’s 90th birthday in 2016, and the weddings of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018 and Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011.
This year’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations will be the fourth major anniversary that the Queen has celebrated since taking the throne in 1952. Some traditions have stayed the same, with street parties and parades staged nationwide during the various festivities. But others – such as Fortnum & Mason’s Platinum Pudding Competition – are a little more unusual.
