Ted Cruz: ISIS is latest example of 'the failures of the Obama-Clinton foreign policies'

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) told reporters at the Iowa Family Leader Summit on Saturday that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is "the latest manifestation of the failures of the Obama-Clinton foreign policies," Time notes.

Cruz echoed his fellow Republicans in saying that while he supported the administration's military airstrikes and humanitarian airdrops in Iraq this weekend, any ongoing operations needed to be approved by Congress.

"I believe initiating new military hostilities on a sustained basis in Iraq obligates the president to go back to Congress and make the case," Cruz said. "I hope that if he intends to continue that, that he does that."

According to Cruz, neither the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force in Iraq, nor the War Power Act give Obama authority to continue airstrikes in Iraq. The Texas senator says that is because the Obama administration's strikes do not include "a clear military objective," and that any ongoing operations should not include attempts to solve "a sectarian civil war that has been waging for over 1,500 years."
