New York City has already seized 288 pounds of heroin through the first four months of the year — and that's just the big drug busts, not the random, low-level street deals cops have broken up. The stream of heroin has grown so dramatically that the amount seized by the city's special narcotics office is now at a 23-year high, according to The New York Times.
New York City is the "head of the Hydra" for the heroin trade, a city narcotics officer, Bridget G. Brennan, told the Times. Heroin busts are up 61 percent on Staten Island alone compared to last year, and about 35 percent of all heroin seized by the DEA since last October has come from New York state.
