TransAsia plane crash-lands in Taipei river

A TransAsia Airways plane carrying more than 50 people has crash-landed in a river in Taipei.

A number of people are said to be injured, the BBC reports, and the cause of the accident is not yet known. The plane had just taken off from Taipei Songshan Airport and was headed to Kinmen Airport on the outskirts of Taiwan when it plunged into the Keelung River. Taiwan's Central News Agency quoted a government spokesman who said the plane hit an elevated bridge before it crashed.

UPDATE 12:45 a.m.: Central News Agency is reporting that at least eight people have died in the crash, and rescue efforts are ongoing.
