Hillary Clinton in 2008 offered to appoint former senator and presidential candidate John Edwards to serve as attorney general, according to a new book by ex-Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod. The one catch: He had to first drop out of the race and endorse her over Obama.

"Well between us, Hillary is offering attorney general, but what John really wants is to be on the ticket," someone in Edwards' camp told Axelrod, according to the latter's book.

The New York Daily News obtained an early copy of the book, which is due out later this month. The paper reported yesterday that the book also alleges Mitt Romney's concession call "irritated" Obama by suggesting the president won the 2012 election thanks to the black vote, a charge the Romney camp denies.
