A member of San Francisco's Board of Supervisors has proposed allowing 16-year-olds to vote in city elections. "I have seen the power of young people," John Avalos said. "It makes sense to give them the right to vote." Critics said Avalos just wants to increase Democratic votes. "Sixteen-year-olds have a lot going for them," said political scientist John Pitney, "but civic judgment isn’t one of those things."
