The White House on Tuesday announced it would keep 9,800 troops in Afghanistan through the end of the year, thereby delaying a planned drawdown to about 5,500 troops by 2016.

"Afghanistan remains a very dangerous place," Obama said in a press conference with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

Troop drawdowns beyond 2015 will be determined later this year based on the trajectory of Afghanistan's security situation, Obama added.
