Experts defuse World War II-era bomb found under London

Hundreds of residents in the southeast London district of Southwark are back in their homes after a 1,000-pound bomb dropped during World War II and discovered on Monday was safely defused.

The five-foot-long bomb was found about six feet below ground by a construction vehicle, and close to 1,200 houses had to be evacuated. During World War II, the Southwark area was the commercial hub of London, Time reports, and heavily bombed. Bombs that never exploded have been found in Southwark since the end of the war, including seven between 2009 and 2014.
