Saudis reportedly seeking ground troops for Yemen as Houthis continue advance
Monday marks 12 days of bombing in Yemen by a Saudi-led air campaign against the Iran-supported Houthi rebels trying to overthrow President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi and his remaining stronghold, the port city of Aden. Pakistan's defense minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, said Monday that Saudi Arabia had asked Pakistan to contribute soldiers as well as aircraft and ships, ramping up speculation that the Saudis are planning a ground invasion into their restive neighbor.
With the death toll in Yemen rising — about 50 fighters were killed in clashes around Aden, Reuters reports, citing militia sources — the Red Cross is urgently trying to deliver aid to a country where electricity, water, and food are increasingly in scarce supply. As of last Thursday, 500 Yemenis have been killed in the past two weeks, according to United Nations estimates. Watch Reuters' report on the fighting in Aden below. —Peter Weber
