A federal judge on Wednesday signed off on a settlement in the years-long concussion litigation between the NFL and thousands of former players. Calling the settlement "fair, reasonable and adequate," Judge Anita Brody gave final approval to the deal, which was reached in late 2013 but delayed while the two sides sorted out the fine print.
Though an estimated 6,000 retirees are expected to receive an average of $190,000 each, the settlement permits payments of up to $5 million to players who developed neurological disorders from their football careers. The settlement could cost the league around $1 billion over 65 years, according to The Associated Press.
