Hawaii to go 100 percent renewable by 2045

Hawaii Gov. David Ige (D) this week signed into law an energy package that commits his state to going 100 percent renewable by 2045. The law requires the state's utilities to generate all of their electricity sales from renewable sources by that date, and would make Hawaii the first state in the country to do so.

Ige said the groundbreaking measure would ensure that Hawaii "remains a national leader in clean energy."

Another part of the package would "help democratize renewable energy by creating a structure that will allow renters, condominium owners, and others who have been largely shut out of Hawaii's clean energy transformation, to purchase electricity generated at an off-site renewable energy facility, such as a large-scale solar farm," according to Hawaii News Now.
