On Wednesday, Israel will begin deploying hundreds of soldiers to help police fight a wave of Palestinian violence in cities around the country. Israel's security cabinet approved new measures on Tuesday night, after three Israeli Jews were killed in Jerusalem earlier in the day — two men were stabbed and shot on a bus, and another was killed when an assailant rammed his car into and started stabbing people at a bus stop — and several others wounded. Six units will be deployed to help the police and "the Israel Police is authorized to impose a closure on, or to surround, centers of friction and incitement in Jerusalem, in accordance with security considerations," the Israeli government said Wednesday. Including Tuesday's fatalities, seven Israelis and 27 Palestinians have been killed in violence in recent weeks sparked by a disagreement involving the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
