Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) has been under investigation by the FBI and the Justice Department since 2015, anonymous U.S. officials told CNN on Monday.
McAuliffe apparently hasn't been notified of the investigation, which is at least partially focused on his gubernatorial campaign donations, including $120,000 from a Chinese businessman. Election law does not permit donations from foreign nationals, but the donation would be considered legal if the businessman, Wang Wenliang, holds permanent residency status.
A spokesman for McAuliffe said if contacted, the governor plans to cooperate with the investigation. Spokespeople for the Justice Department and the FBI declined CNN's requests for comment.
