This TV repels mosquitoes
Keeping mosquitoes at bay can require a full deployment of citronella candles and chemical mists, so wouldn't it just be so much nicer if all it took to not get Zika, malaria, or dengue was sitting in your living room and watching Orange is the New Black? Well, the Indian branch of LG Electronics is making that a reality with the sale of mosquito-repellent televisions.
Here's how it works: The TVs emit "Mosquito Away Technology," or ultrasonic waves that apparently make mosquitoes run for the hills, NBC reports. But you don't have to worry about the waves interrupting your favorite show, because the sound is inaudible to humans. LG has used the same waves in air conditioners and washing machines, the company said in a statement, and the technology has been certified as effective by an independent lab in Chennai, India.
You don't have to binge-watch anything to make it work, either: The TV continues to emit the waves even when it's turned off. It is priced between $394 and $704, and will go on sale next month in the Philippines and Sri Lanka.
