No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal won his 16th Grand Slam title Sunday when he defeated Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in the U.S. Open men's final.

This is the third U.S. Open championship for Nadal, a Spaniard, and it was his 23rd career Grand Slam final; he won the French Open in June. Anderson, from South Africa, was ranked No. 32 and was attempting to become the lowest-ranking player to win the U.S. Open. It was his first appearance in a major final.
