Massive fire at Siberian mall kills at least 64
Authorities in Siberia say at least 37 people died in a fire that swept through a mall in the city of Kemerovo on Sunday, Russian news agencies are reporting.
More than 100 people were evacuated from the mall, which houses shops, restaurants, and movie theaters. Video showed people jumping out of windows to safety, and black smoke billowing from the building. Authorities said they do not yet know what caused the fire to break out. Kemerovo is 2,200 miles east of Moscow.
Update 5:15 a.m. ET: Russian Emergency Situations Minister Vladimir Puchkov said the confirmed death toll from the Winter Cherry mall fire is up to 64, and that some of the dead were recovered from the mall's cinema. He did not say how many of the victims are children, but survivors said the mall was packed with parents and their kids celebrating the start of a school recess.
