On Thursday, a federal judge in Georgia sentenced former National Security Agency contractor Reality Winner to five years and three months in prison, after she pleaded guilty to leaking classified intelligence to the news site The Intercept.
Winner, a 26-year-old Air Force veteran, pleaded guilty in June. She is the first person prosecuted by the Trump administration for leaking to the media, NPR reports.
While working for the private contractor Pluribus International last year, Winner sent documents to The Intercept about Russian military intelligence trying to phish U.S. election officials. Officials were able to figure out Winner leaked the information after The Intercept showed them the documents, NPR reports, and they were able to determine the printer that had been used.
