Republican Josh Hawley defeats Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in Missouri

Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill (Mo.) has lost her re-election bid to Republican challenger Josh Hawley, according to projections from Fox News and NBC News.
McCaskill, a moderate Democrat first elected in 2006, had in the closing weeks of this tight race attempted to distance herself from the rest of her party, and from what she called “crazy Democrats,” while Hawley described her as being out-of-touch and “just like Hillary." Missouri went for Donald Trump in 2016 by nearly 20 percentage points. McCaskill’s re-election had been key for Democrats who had hoped to take control of the Senate, but Republicans are now projected to retain their majority in the chamber.
