Parkland commission releases report recommending arming teachers

A state commission has released a report on last year's school shooting in Parkland, Florida that recommends some teachers carry guns in school.
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission approved a report that includes this recommendation, The Sun-Sentinel reports. It also says more money should be spent on security measures in schools and suggests districts raise taxes for that purpose.
Florida's legislature and governor would need to take the next steps for these proposals to take shape, the Sun-Sentinel notes, and the Senate Education Committee says it will discuss the report in a meeting on Tuesday. However, several members of the Broward School Board, including one whose daughter was killed in the 2018 shooting, said they oppose the armed teachers idea and think it's unlikely to earn the board's support. The teachers union there is also against the proposal, per Fox News.

This controversial concept was floated in the aftermath of the shooting by some Republicans including President Trump, who said, "If you had a teacher who was adept with the firearm, they could end the attack very quickly," per CNN.
