David Ortiz, the former Boston Red Sox slugger, was shot and wounded Sunday at a night club in the Dominican Republic, a Dominican National Police spokesman tells CNN, confirming local reports. The spokesman, Felix Durán Mejia, said Ortiz was shot in the back, while local reports say he was shot in the leg or side. He is said to be in stable condition in a Santo Domingo hospital, USA Today reports.

Ortiz, a 10-time Major League Baseball All-Star and star of three World Series-winning Red Sox teams, retired in 2016. During his 19 seasons in the majors, he hit 541 home runs, 483 of them with Boston and 17 of them in the postseason. He was World Series MVP in 2013.
