Pete Buttigieg is surging in Iowa
South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg is now polling ahead of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and just a few points behind former Vice President Joe Biden, in Iowa.
A new Suffolk University/USA TODAY poll of likely Democratic caucusgoers released Monday shows Buttigieg in third place with 13 percent support, an impressive 7 point bump from the previous July poll showing him in fifth place in Iowa with 6 percent support.
Buttigieg is polling behind only Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who earned 17 percent support, and Biden, who earned 18 percent support. He's ahead of Sanders, who saw no change in support since the July poll with 9 percent, and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), who in July was in second place with 16 percent support but has since plunged 13 points. Although Biden is still at the front of the pack, he has fallen 6 points in this poll since July, while Warren is up 4 points. The July poll was taken after the first Democratic presidential debate.

This new one comes after the fourth Democratic debate, during which Buttigieg went after Warren for not directly answering the question of whether she'll raise taxes on the middle class to pay for Medicare-for-all and saying, "No plan has been laid out to explain how a multi-trillion dollar hole in this plan that Sen. Warren is putting forward is supposed to get filled in."
Suffolk University/USA TODAY's poll was conducted by speaking to 500 likely Democratic caucusgoers over the phone from Oct. 16-18. The margin of error is 4.4 percentage points. Read more results at USA Today.
