2. Roy ruled out for two games
Opening batsman Jason Roy has been ruled out of England’s next two Cricket World Cup matches because of a hamstring injury. He will miss the games against Afghanistan tomorrow at Old Trafford and Sri Lanka on Friday at Headingley. Captain Eoin Morgan will also have his fitness assessed.
The 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup final on Sunday 14 July could yet be shown on free-to-air TV in the UK according to International Cricket Council (ICC) chief David Richardson. The tournament is being shown live on Sky Sports, with highlights on Channel 4 and clips on the BBC Sport website. However, Richardson confirmed that the ECB was “working with the Sky people to try to maximise the reach for the match”. He told the BBC: “We are hopeful that something can be arranged in that regards.”
4. Messi: we must move on after defeat
Lionel Messi has called on his Argentina team-mates to “move on” from the 2-0 loss against Colombia in their opening match of the 2019 Copa America. Argentina are in group B of the South American tournament and their next match against Paraguay on Thursday 20 June (1.30am BST) is now a must-win. Argentina captain Messi said: “It’s not the best way to start, but if we keep lamenting and don’t move on, if we don’t pick ourselves up, we won’t be prepared to face Paraguay in the next match.”
Boxer Tyson Fury “dazzled” on his Las Vegas debut, says the Daily Mirror, after stopping Tom Schwarz in the second round. Taking inspiration from Apollo Creed of the Rocky films, Fury stepped into the ring wearing the US stars and stripes and was accompanied by James Brown’s Living in America. It’s reported today that the “Gypsy King” could face Jarrell Miller in his next fight. Miller missed out on a title bout against Anthony Joshua after failing three drugs tests, but the Brooklyn brawler is now being considered for a fight against Fury in New York on 5 October.
6. Pogba wants ‘new challenge’
Paul Pogba is considering leaving Manchester United after declaring that it’s time for a “new challenge”. Speaking during a promotional tour in Tokyo, Pogba told reporters: “I am thinking of this: to have a new challenge somewhere else. For me, I have been for three years in Manchester and have been doing great; some good moments and some bad moments, like everybody. Like everywhere else.”
Thailand head coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian and her staff were in tears on the bench after captain Kanjana Sung-Ngoen’s 91st-minute goal against Sweden in the Fifa Women’s World Cup. Thailand may have conceded 18 goals in their opening two games of the Fifa Women’s World Cup but their consolation against Sweden on Sunday will go down as one of the tournament’s great moments.
Spanish racing driver Fernando Alonso clinched the World Endurance Championship (WEC) title with Toyota after a second successive victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours race. Sky Sports reports that his WEC title comes 13 years since he won his second and final Formula 1 world championship.
9. Surgery a ‘life-changer’ for Murray
Andy Murray will make his return to tennis this week at Queen’s after having hip surgery. There were fears that Murray could be forced to retire, but he will be back on court on Wednesday when he partners Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in the Fever-Tree Championships. Murray told BBC Sport: “I didn’t expect to be in this position. I didn’t know how it would feel if I went and had the operation. But it has been brilliant, completely life-changing for me from where I was. I’m looking forward to getting back out there, but I don’t know what to expect and I’m not putting any kind of expectations on myself. Just being out on the tennis court and being pain free is enough.”
