House GOP expands solar loan investigation

Did the White House rush to approve Solyndra’s loan for political purposes?

House Republicans are widening an investigation into Solyndra, a California solar-panel manufacturer that declared bankruptcy last month after receiving a $535 million loan guarantee from the federal government. Administration officials faced a congressional subcommittee this week to answer charges that the White House rushed the approval of Solyndra’s loan for political purposes. “You should have protected the taxpayers,” said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), the subcommittee’s chairman. The company’s offices were raided by the FBI last week, and GOP lawmakers are probing whether Solyndra’s ties to a prominent Democratic fund-raiser helped it secure its federal assistance.
