A federal judge on Thursday ordered Mobile County, Alabama, to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, a decision that could put to rest dissonance over the issue in the state. Judge Callie V. S. Granade ruled that a local probate judge could not deny gay couples marriage licenses "on the ground that Plaintiffs constitute same-sex couples or because it is prohibited by the sanctity of marriage."

The Supreme Court this week cleared the way for same-sex marriage to begin in the state, but most counties refused to comply. Same-sex couples denied the chance to marry sued, setting up Thursday's hearing.
