House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy announces he's running for speaker
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) announced Monday that he's running to replace John Boehner as House speaker. The announcement comes just days after Boehner revealed that he would be stepping down as speaker and resigning from Congress at the end of October.
"I want us to be much closer to the people we represent, and I want them to once again feel like this is their government," McCarthy said in an email to GOP lawmakers. McCarthy's announcement is hardly a surprise — he's been calling lawmakers and asking for their support — and he is largely expected to win the speakership.
