Man in critical condition following fight at Ravens-Raiders game
A 55-year-old Maryland man remains hospitalized in critical condition, following an altercation at the end of Sunday's Ravens-Raiders game at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
Joseph Bauer, a Ravens season ticket holder and father of two adult children, suffered a major brain injury during the fight. His sister, Susan Bauer, told The Baltimore Sun her family is "clinging to hope. He's still not responsive and not awake, and we don't know the extent of his brain damage. The doctors said it was consistent with a major stroke." Two Raiders fans from New York — Scott Smith, 30, of Mount Vernon, and Andrew Nappi, 31, of Eastchester — have been charged with first- and second-degree assault in connection with the fight. Both have been released after posting bail.
Police say Nappi told them the men started to argue, and after Bauer threw a bottle that hit Smith in the head, he punched him. Bauer's wife, Sharon, said Smith pushed her husband to the ground, and he hit his head and was knocked unconscious. It's unclear what the men were fighting about. Ravens Coach John Harbaugh called the incident "absolutely inexcusable," and promised that "whatever security has to be out there, whatever has to be done, will be done." Susan Bauer said the family remains "in shock" that "something this stupid could happen, and so senseless. I don't know who these people are. I don't know why this happened. I just hope they realize they have altered all of our lives beyond anything that we could have imagined."
