The best Sunday roasts around London and the UK
They say you can’t beat a home-cooked roast with all the trimmings but these restaurants prove it can be just as good to head out
It is an age-old tradition that, for many, comes to define what the second half of the weekend is all about: eating food, and lots of it. Piling our plates with layers of gravy-covered meat (or some kind of squash wellington), flanked with fluffy-on-the-inside-crispy-on-the-outside roast potatoes, stuffing, roasted veg and, of course, the inimitable Yorkshire pudding is basically a rite of passage. Here are some of the most delicious roast dinner offerings from around the UK to satisfy the most British of requirements.
Hotel du Vin, Birmingham
Those who like their Sundays to be all about the food should head to Hotel du Vin in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Kick off a delectable four courses with a seasonal soup, followed by a trip to the French market table buffet for a selection of seafood, charcuterie, pates and rillettes. The third course is the main event with a choice of Aberdeenshire beef rib or Normandy chicken each served with all the trimmings and a fluffy Yorkshire. If you've still got room, try the moreish banana-rum bread and butter pudding with rum and raisin ice cream.

Camp and Furnace, Liverpool
Sharing is most certainly caring at this impressive and vast warehouse space, a stone's throw from the banks of the Mersey in Liverpool. Exposed brick walls surround long communal tables where, on Sundays, up to 400 people will come through the doors for lunch. Organic chickens and joints of lamb, beef or pork are ceremoniously delivered whole to the table with a carving knife. Steaming hot roasties, vegetables, Yorkshire puddings and "proper" gravy accompany every meal and the sharing continues with its range of sharing puds. It would be rude not to tuck in to the giant sticky toffee pudding with a slathering of creamy custard. When in Liverpool…

Chiringuito, London
This beach bar-style cafe is perhaps better known as one of Bethnal Green’s hippest drinking spots - the young and fashionable teem from its colourful edges at all hours.
But now Peruvian Head Chef Marco Padilla has designed a weekend menu inspired by fresh Latin American flavours while embracing seasonal British produce. Every Sunday from 3pm Padilla cooks up an array of different meat and veggie options from Carne Asada - a slow-cooked British rump, to baked aubergine stuffed with mixed vegetables and vegan cheese.
The Peruvian flavours make for a welcome change from more traditional British roasts served around the capital. The star of the menu is the Pollo Pachamanca - half a baby chicken slow-roasted in the traditional Peruvian style, which sent us home happy on a Sunday evening.
For traditionalists, all roasts at Chiringuito are served with an abundance of crispy rosemary potatoes, honey-glazed carrots and seasonal roasted vegetables on the side. Oh and do try the cocktails, they really don’t leave you wanting but we can’t promise they’ll make you young and fashionable again.
Roasts begin at 3pm and are priced from £12, Museum Gardens, Cambridge Heath Rd, Bethnal Green, London E2 9PA; chiringuito.co.uk/
The Cumberland Bar, Edinburgh
Relax, read the paper and sip on a frothy ale while you wait for your lunch at this classic Victorian bar, set on a World Heritage site in Edinburgh’s New Town. With a clear aim to recreate the traditional lazy Sunday lunches of yore, head chef Craig McKend succeeds in delivering delicious hot dinners with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Sunday roast menu changes weekly to take advantage of the seasonal offerings and the roast potatoes are consistently excellent.
From £15.95 for two courses, 1-7pm, The Cumberland Bar, 1-3 Cumberland Street, Edinburgh EH3 6RT; cumberlandbar.co.uk

The Royal Oak, London
With candle-lit dining in the evenings, The Royal Oak in Bethnal Green has a familiar living-room vibe that makes it the perfect place to fill-up with a Sunday roast. It is run by the former executive chef at Duck & Waffle, Dan Doherty, whose talent is exemplified in the menu. Perfect for pleasing a crowd, Sunday roast options include seven-hour roast lamb shoulder, Hereford beef, free-range chicken, and stuffed roast pumpkin with fig for veggie friends. The Yorkshire puddings are massive, the potatoes are crispy, and everything is undeniably delicious.
